Jaime Escalante “Rise to the occasion” first day cover

When the Jaime Escalante stamp was announced, I drove to East Los Angeles (about twenty minutes distant) before dawn so that I could photograph James A. Garfield High School — the public school where Escalante taught for years — at sunrise. At home, I ran edge-detection algorithms on my photograph to extract a line drawing.

The entrance to the school is in shadow at dawn, so it shows up as a void in a line extraction. I placed an inspirational quote from Escalante into that space: "If we expect students to be winners and expect them to do well, they will rise to the occasion."

These covers from @McGeekiest Cachets are postmarked with the four-bar First Day of Issue postmark from Washington, DC dated July 13, 2016.
