The Wings over Northern Michigan Airshow is an annual event featuring aerobatic acts, airplanes and helicopters to admire, and exotic sports cars to test drive. In 2016, The Geiger Postal History Foundation arranged for a pictorial postmark commemorating airmail postal history to coordinate with the show.
For these covers, I processed a flat image of a Michigan flag to make it appear printed on fluttering fabric. I isolated the four planes of the AeroShell Aerobatic Team from a background of blue sky and overlaid them onto the flag. For postage, I used a 1987 Michigan Statehood Sesquicentennial stamp (Scott #2246) and 1949 Universal Postal Union airmail stamp (Scott #C44) commemorating the agency of the United Nations that allows the international mail system to function to this day.
Each cover is cancelled with a "Geiger Postal History Foundation Wings Over Northern Michigan Airmail Station" pictorial postmark from Gaylord, Michigan, dated either June 18th or 19th of 2016. I prepared four.
