“Battle of Machias” Margaretta Days cover

Sometimes called "The Lexington of the Seas", the Battle of Machias marked the first naval engagement of the American Revolutionary War, when settlers in present-day Machias, Maine captured the armed schooner HMS Margaretta in June of 1775. Though many details are now shrouded in myth, the event marked an escalation and turning point in the battle for American independence.

Machias marks the occasion each year with a "Margaretta Days" commemoration. For these covers, I digitally processed an artistic depiction of the battle so that appeared on the wall of a museum, with a plaque underneath reading "The Battle of Machias". For postage I used one 1970 Maine Statehood sesquicentennial stamp (Scott #1391) and one 41¢ tan flag First Class stamp from 2007 (Scott #4129) to fit the color scheme. Each cover is postmarked with Margaretta Days Station pictorial postmark from Machias, Maine dated June 11, 2016.
