From the Historical Society of Garfield, NJ Facebook Page:
On this date [July 19] in 1923, the Garfield Public Library formally opened its doors. The library was the result of a grassroots movement led by the eighth grade students at School No. 2. Through their efforts the city council was persuaded to approve a library ordinance on March 13, 1923 and appropriate $10,000. At its opening, the library boasted a collection of 1,500 books of all kinds and soon added another 500. Almost immediately there was discussion about outgrowing its location at 190 Palisade Avenue. In 1941, the library became an official entity of the City of Garfield with the passage of a library referendum. [1]
From the Passaic Daily Herald of July 19, 1923:
The Garfield Public Library will formally open this evening. Application blanks and cards will be issued to only adults this evening and to children tomorrow. For months the librarian Miss Irene Kennedy and her assistant Miss Anna Ciccoe have been working in the new library, which is temporarily located on Palisade avenue, near Grand street. [2]
