Research:

From the Eastern Arizona Courier newspaper:

SAFFORD — The General Federation of Women’s Clubs Woman’s Club of Safford is celebrating 100 years as a Federated Woman’s Club, and to kick off the celebration, which will culminate in an Open House to be held next month, the Club presented the Friends of Safford City-Graham County Library with a $1,000 donation.

"It is fitting that we kick off the celebration with this particular donation," said Woman’s Club President Marisela Pennington. "After all, it was the Woman’s Club who opened and operated the Library on March 3, 1916, in the Courthouse." [1]

Notes:

According to Sue Dette Crandall Reed's paper "A Book Is A Book Is A Book: Thanks for our Public Libraries", the Safford Women's Club established a Safford Public Library in 1916 and maintained it until July 1, 1962, when the books were given to the city. Ms. Reed's citation is Mt Graham Profiles, Vol 1 pg. 411, which appears to only be available in print, and to which I do not have access. [2]
